According to one calendar this year, in the northern hemisphere, March 20th marks the beginning of the Spring or “vernal” Equinox. “Equinox”, which in Latin translates “equality of night and day”, the exact time when the sun is exactly above the equator. (Don’t worry, if you miss this one there will be an autumnal equinox in September!) But, how will you celebrate this beginning of Spring (even if the weather seems to say otherwise)? Here’s a suggestion, with others to follow soon. Check out the Greener Gleaners Calendar Tomorrow (3/20) orientations for the next C3 Spring Leadership Training continue. If you want to find out more about how you can bring an environmental education event to your block or workplace, this might be the opportunity. (And don’t worry, just like the autumnal equinox, there will be a Fall training, too.) Now, how about sharing some of your Spring welcoming plans? Some call it cabin fever or spring fever. You know, that restless urge to get outside after a long winter’s confinement? But what if it's just our natural reflex to be a part of nature? As April rains will soon give way to May foliage, we celebrate Earth Day. First observed April 22, 1970, a revolutionary idea, proposed by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson, to educate and give voice to ordinary citizens compelled by our natural reflex for Clean Air, Clean Water and to protect Endangered Species (all new legislation proposed and enacted as a result of that first Earth Day!) What will you do this Earth Day? Perhaps you have already decided to plant a tree, begin a garden or participate in a local cleanup event in the neighborhood or at the beach. Perhaps you will join the thousands who will March for Science or gather at a local community rally. Those are all great one day options. However, we hope if you are in the Rogers Park area, in the afternoon [between 1-3 pm] of April 22nd, (and you still have a little energy left) you’ll come explore some Earth Day options to carry you throughout the year, inside and out, as you look to reduce your environmental footprint and its impact on your budget and our planet. Meet representatives, experts and advocates from the Chicago's Safe Routes and Bicycling Ambassadors, Chicago Department of Transportation, Active Transportation Alliance, The Recyclery , Citizens Utility Board, and Elevate Energy, as they discuss pedestrian and cyclist safety, alternative transportation & active transportation advocacy; new community solar projects in the area to help renters and condo owners take advantage of solar panels and renewable energy, and pending environmental legislation for cable and landlines, and how to make your voice heard. Also, please visit our Earth Day Resource Expo, and learn what local organizations are doing to advocate for and protect our valuable natural resources and ways you can take action, too. With only less than three years to the 50th Earth Day Anniversary, let’s all pledge to learn more about how our actions can impact change! Saturday, April 22, 2017 1:00-3:00 PM Willye B. As Chicagoans, many of us think of Lake Michigan as that great unlimited water source on our eastern shore. When we remember to think about our other dynamic water resource, the Chicago River, we focus briefly on that backward flowing body of water famous for green dye on St. Patrick Day, or its historically smelly spot of stockyard runoff, know as “Bubbly Creek”. Yet, few of us consider what happens after we turn on the faucet, or flush the toilet. Join us on Saturday, March 25th for the third event in our Winter Workshop Series, “Water, Water Everywhere But, Is It Safe to Drink?” as local experts help us focus on what’s happening in our region with water conservation, filtration and stormwater management. Wondering if a “Flint Michigan” could happen here? Want to know what’s really in the water when children take a sip at a school or park district water fountain? Worried about what you might be brushing your teeth with or water used for cooking? Ever had a flooded basement or backyard? Thinking ahead to summer, will it be safe to go jump in the lake? Can we really eat fish from the river? What about the chemicals in your neighbor's lush green lawn? What are microbeads, anyway? How should we dispose of unwanted medicine? Does buying bottled water really matter? How can we save more money on our water bills, while creating a more water-rich environment for all? For answers to these and other questions, meet representatives and experts from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD), RainReady, Chicago Park District, Beach Water Quality Program and Citizens Utility Board. Also, stay for our Water Action Fair, and learn what local organizations are doing to advocate for and protect our valuable water resources and ways you can take action, too. Gosh! Could Punxsutawney Phil be wrong?! If you have been out and about the Chicago area recently, you know we’ve had some record breaking, unseasonably warm weather. It’s hard to focus on cold weather projects with temps like these. But, if you’ve lived in Chicago awhile, you know we only have to wait a moment for the temperature to change. And those rooms we want to make cozy, will still be there when the cold returns or the heat descends. Join us, Saturday, February 25th, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, to learn what we can do to keep comfortable, save money and do less harm to the planet. [And, if you are able, please bring a gift to help our neighbors and shelter pets stay warm and happy, too. See more details and register below] Saturday, February 25, 2017 1:00-3:00 PM Willye B. The vintage housing stock of Rogers Park is no exception. If, according to Punxsutawney Phil, there’s “at least six more weeks of winter chill expected”, what are some affordable options for keeping that room warm and cozy? On Saturday, February 25th, Chicago Conservation Corps (C3) leaders will team up with representatives of Elevate Energy and the Citizens Utility Board to share effective low cost weatherization solutions, discuss energy efficient alternatives for saving money while protecting the environment and making your home more comfortable for all its inhabitants (including pets, if you have them.)
